History of Henry Voelcker, Inc.

The Voelcker family business began in Danville, PA in 1912, when Henry Voelcker, Sr. came to town to manage the Hanover Brewing Company for the Malinowski family.  The brewery was located on Steeb Street, which is behind the present Danville Ambulance Service Center.  The greenhouse on the North side of Blizzard Run was the brewery.  The red brick building was the bottling works, and the white barn was used for storage, along with the stone and wooden structures across Spring Street.  A fire destroyed the upper floor of this garage/warehouse at some point in the 1930's, but the stone foundations remain.  The opening furthest to the right leads to a large man-made stone arch cave which was dug deep into the hill under B Street, and was used for cold storage and aging of the beer.  This is the structure which has recently been referred to as the "Beer Caves".

In 1915, Emil Malinowski completed construction of the Franklin Brewery in Hanover Township, near Wilkes-Barre: and sold the Danville properties to Henry Voelcker, Sr.  He then appointed Voelcker as the distributor for Franklin Beer in the Danville area.

Prohibition began in 1920 and put a slight damper on the beer business.  Non-alcoholic beers were made then, as they are now, by brewing the real product and removing the alcohol.  This left the real product available at times for those enterprising people who didn't quite believe in the justice of the Volstead Act.  The business continued until the time when a very valued employee was arrested, and forced to spend several days in jail.  At that point in time Voelcker decided that attempting to continue the sale and distribution of beer was no longer worth the risk.

Henry, Sr. continued in business, manufacturing pants hangers and rug beaters, growing mushrooms in the old aging cellar, and starting the Coca-Cola Bottling Works in Danville. With the eventual and long awaited repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Henry Voelcker, Jr. joined his father reintroducing beer to the area.  Having outgrown the old brewery buildings in the late 1940's, the Voelcker's moved their sales and distributing operation to the red brick building by the tracks on Railroad Street which presently houses Jaws Recycling.  Experiencing continued growth, they began construction on a brand new facility at 346-352 Ferry Street in the late 1950's.  The business moved to that, its present location, in the 1960.

Having spent many part-time hours stacking empties and carrying beer, Richard M. Voelcker joined his father on a full time basis in 1968, bringing the venture into a third generation.  During the following years, with the advance of the large National Breweries, Henry Voelcker, Inc. concentrated on the development of the "better brands".  These include the specialty imported beers and an extensive variety of America's new Micro-Brewed Styles. Most of the items on the list that exceeds 300 items are available year round.

On May 16, 2006 the current owner, Marcus VanSickle, took over making many changes. Converting the warehouse to a retail store and increasing the selection of good beers over 1000.
